I’m doing something today I don’t I too often. I’m sitting in Starbucks watching the world go by.

I was a buckaroo (that’s starbonics for an employee) for about five years. This was truly the most fun job I’ve ever had. Every time I put on that green apron, I felt like an actor walking on to the stage. I said things to customers I’d never really say in real life. All said with a smile and a little extra sass. Seriously, when you are getting coffee at 5am who wants a barista that’s yawning and bored?

When I lived in Portland, there was a Starbucks on every corner, and the mothership was just a few hours north, the expectations were higher. Now, visiting Starbucks has a different feel. One of my first times in a store here, it took me 20 minutes to get an iced tea and a muffin… And I got the wrong muffin. I just smiled and walked away. Today’s experience was more akin to what I had experienced in days long gone by.

My orthopedist’s office is just across the street and my next stop is to get a new vehicle plate for my van. In the middle, I’m treating myself to some people watching.

The nice thing about this hour of the day, most of the patrons are professionals and nicely put together. There’s the gentle tinkling sound of coffee beans being scooped and the swooshing of milk being foamed; all of this overlaid with a funky rock beat and hushed southern accents chatting.

Alright… Time to get on with waiting at the DMV.

Enjoy your day.
